Xiaomi Mi 4 Flashing Guide, Unbricking, and Historical ROM Collection

Unbricking

Bricked your phone by tinkering, or after a failed repartition? Cannot enter REC or fastboot (repartitioning can erase fastboot), and the screen stays black no matter what you press? Don't worry—here's how to fix it! (Works with all models and is fully compatible with the Mi 4.)

  1. Download the latest Xiaomi fastboot ROM and MiFlash. (Preferably use the latest version of MiFlash.) 2. Restart your computer and repeatedly press F8 (on Windows 8 and later, you can use Advanced Startup). Select Disable Driver Signature Enforcement. (If partitioning failed but your computer can still recognize the phone's disk, skip this step.) 3. After connecting the phone to your computer by USB, QHSUSB-DLOAD appears, but its driver cannot be installed. (If it doesn't appear, look in Device Manager!) This driver is actually included in the MiFlash download. Right-click My Computer, then go to Properties – Device Manager – Other Devices. Right-click to update the driver, choose to browse your computer, and point it to Qualcomm inside the MiFlash directory. (If partitioning failed but your computer can still recognize the phone's disk, skip this step.) 4. Open MiFlash. Click the downward triangle in the upper-right corner and open Advanced Settings. Change the fastboot script path by opening the ROM package and selecting flash_all directly (or select Clean All at the bottom of the program). Leave everything else alone. 5. Click Flash. MiFlash will erase and write the phone's ROM and restore the official partition layout. When the progress bar finishes, the phone will still have a black screen and be unresponsive. Unplug the data cable and hold down the power button (if the battery is removable, you can try removing and reinserting it) until the white Mi logo appears and the phone boots! Reposted from the MIUI forum.

REC

I spent quite a while tinkering with this today and found that there wasn't a recovery-flashing tool that could handle the entire process from a computer. I put together resources from other enthusiasts to build a one-click tool for flashing the latest Chinese TWRP 3.0.2 recovery by @秋叶随风. Thanks to @秋叶随风! Thank you all for your support! It has been tested on the China Mobile version of the Xiaomi Mi 4; do not use it on the China Telecom version. Flashing

Download the universal flashing tool here (size: 51M, MD5: 87c313381db7a7320ca6027c08f6829f). (If drivers are needed, run XiaoMiFlash.exe, click Driver in the upper-left corner, then click Install.) ■ indicates a Google model with a locked bootloader; first follow the unlocking tutorial. (After unlocking, follow the flashing tutorial.) ★ indicates a Xiaomi model with a locked bootloader; first download the universal unlocking tool here and unlock it. (After unlocking, follow the flashing tutorial.) ☆ indicates an unlocked model, which can proceed directly with the tutorial. (Check that the file extension is ".tgz". If it is ".gz", rename it to ".tgz".)

On the phone: with the phone powered off, hold Volume Down + Power to enter Fastboot mode, then connect the phone to the computer by USB.

After downloading the fastboot ROM, extract it, open its folder, and copy the address from the address bar as shown below.

After downloading the flashing tool, install it (allow the installation if a system security prompt appears). Open XiaoMiFlash.exe and paste the copied path into the area marked in blue. Click the area circled in yellow to load devices. The flashing program will automatically detect your phone. Click the area circled in red to begin flashing. For models with a bootloader lock, “Clean all and lock” is selected by default. For models without a bootloader lock, manually select “Clean all” (shown in the green box below).

Then wait. The screen below indicates a successful flash; the phone will turn on automatically.

If the tutorial above doesn't help, click here to download Mi PC Suite (After installing Mi PC Suite, make sure the phone has entered fastboot mode, connect it to the computer, and select the appropriate version to complete the flash.)

When I pasted the link for the China Telecom 4G Stable 9.5.1.0 Fastboot ROM and saved the post, part of the letter-and-number combination in the link automatically turned into **, making the URL invalid and the download inaccessible. When downloading, replace “**” in the link with: b 5 0 (remove the spaces between them. I don't know why the forum blocks this string).

Xiaomi Mi 4 MIUI 7, MIUI 6, and MIUI V5 ROMs have already been collected in this post** (http://www.miui.com/thread-10813361-1-1.html)****, but since they were in the replies, many people missed them, so I am making a separate post.**

Xiaomi Mi 4 MIUIV5 Developer and Stable ROM Collection: Fastboot and Recovery Packages

Most of the older packages are gone now. Grab these if you need them!

If the download fails, right-click and try downloading with Xunlei. If that still does not work, use the cloud-storage links below.

Compatible with all Mi 4 models except the China Telecom 4G model

【About the three-wipe procedure on Xiaomi phones】 1. This means clearing the cache, user data, and all data in rec (recovery) mode. Doing these three wipes before flashing the system prevents leftover files from the old system from conflicting with the new one and causing FCs. 2. The three-wipe procedure can be used when a phone freezes and won't boot. 3. If the system keeps reporting “xx process (application) has stopped”, try the three wipes. If the problem persists, download a complete Fastboot ROM and flash it once. 【There are three ways to enter rec (recovery) mode】 1. Open System Update, press the menu button, and choose Reboot into rec mode. This is the easiest method. 2. If your phone can no longer boot (it has frozen), use this method to enter rec mode: with the phone powered off, hold (Volume Up) and (Power) at the same time. You must hold both together. After the screen lights up, keep holding until it enters RE, then release them. That concludes the three-wipe tutorial.

3. If the phone works normally, turn it on, connect it to third-party software, and choose to reboot into REC (recovery) mode.

Win10

An Extremely Detailed Beginner's Guide to Flashing Windows 10 on the Xiaomi Mi 4

This post was last edited by 七剑侠第二代 on 2016-2-14 at 17:44

Statement 1: Currently, only mainland-China Mi4 LTE (4G) phones for China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom are supported. Mi4 3G phones are not supported.

Notice 2: When flashing Windows 10 with MiFlash, the supported PC operating systems are 64-bit Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10. Windows XP is not supported.

Statement 3: Make sure your phone is running the original MIUI system and that its system partitions have never been modified by unofficial methods. Phones whose partitions were merged for Android M using official MIUI can also be flashed.

Statement 4: When flashing back from Windows 10 to MIUI, use an Android 4.4-based MIUI fastboot ROM (version 5.12.4 or earlier), or the phone may be bricked.

Please read the statements above carefully before flashing!!!!!

Important things deserve saying three times!!!!

Preparation: 1. Make sure your phone has more than 80% battery remaining; 2. The date on the phone must be correct before flashing and must not have been changed; 3. Flashing will erase all data, so prepare your important information beforehand, including contacts, photos, music, and other important files (you can back them up with third-party software such as WeChat, QQ Sync Assistant, or Mi Cloud); 4. We recommend flashing while on WIFI so you won't incur mobile-data charges during setup afterward.

Important things deserve saying three times!!!!

Step 1: Download and install Miflash. http://www.miui.com/thread-3163611-1-1.html  See this post for the download link and Miflash installation process; I won't repeat them here. (It's recommended to keep the default storage location rather than changing it arbitrarily.) Step 2: Obtain the firmware download link.

Method 1: First, you need a Microsoft account. Open https://insider.windows.com, select “Get Started” > sign in to your Microsoft account > submit the registration page. After submitting it successfully, you'll be a member of the Windows Insider Program. Then click “Xiaomi”, and you'll find the download link on the page that opens.

Method 2: Click the following address to download directly: http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/D/A/2DADAC57-D038-4164-8F19-65CB45F63166/10586.63.0115.3063.RTF.Retail.zip (Updated to the latest firmware.) Step 3: Extract the firmware you just downloaded. Double-click the downloaded firmware to open it in your extraction tool. Extract it to get the folder shown in the image. Set it aside for now. Step 4: Enable developer mode on your phone. On the Mi 4 LTE, go to Settings -> About Phone, then tap MIUI Version five times. Step 5: Enable USB debugging on your phone. Connect the Mi 4 LTE to your computer. On the device, go to Settings -> Additional Settings -> Developer Options -> USB Debugging and accept the confirmation prompt. (Key step) Step 6: Put the device into flashing mode from your computer. Connect the phone to your computer while it is powered on. Find the MiFlash folder downloaded and installed in Step 1 (this version is named MiPhone), double-click to open it, then open the google folder and the android folder, as shown. Now hold Shift on your keyboard and right-click an empty area in that folder (keep holding Shift). Select Open command window here to open the command-line program, as shown. Enter adb reboot edl (note that the last character is a lowercase L, not an i or the number 1). The Mi 4 LTE will now remain on a black screen. Leave the phone alone and proceed to the next step. (Key step) Step 7: Install Windows 10 Mobile on the Mi 4 LTE. Once Step 6 is complete and the phone's screen has gone black, do not touch the phone again. Launch the MiFlash tool downloaded in Step 1 on your computer, then click Refresh in the tool's interface to connect to the Mi 4 LTE. You will see a row named COM followed by a number. Open the firmware folder downloaded and extracted in Step 3, copy its address from the address bar (as shown in image 1 below), paste it into MiFlash's address field, and click Flash. When the tool displays Flash complete, you are done. Hold the power button on the Mi 4 LTE to start using Windows 10 Mobile. (This step is similar to flashing a MIUI fastboot ROM.) (The images below use a different English version of MiFlash as an example; the procedure is the same for the MiFlash version used here.) Your phone has now been successfully flashed to Windows 10. Start your Windows Mobile journey! Of course, if you find it unfamiliar or do not like it, you can flash back to MIUI at any time. See this tutorial for details: http://www.miui.com/thread-3185719-1-1.html (Be sure to choose an Android 4.4 fastboot ROM.) Appendix: Solutions to specific problems during flashing: 1. If flashing reports “Reached the end of the file,” try the following: Close MiFlash and disconnect the Mi 4 from your computer. Remove all additional serial-port devices installed on the computer. Check the devices under Ports (COM & LPT) in Device Manager and make sure there are no extra devices other than the Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 port and ports required by the system. Restart the Mi 4 and follow the instructions to enter 9008 flashing mode again. Open MiFlash and flash again. If the problem persists, try another computer running a 64-bit operating system. 2. If flashing reports “Not enough storage,” try the following: Switch your computer to a 64-bit operating system. 3. Why does flashing report “Error loading type library/DLL” or “The system cannot find the file specified”? These errors commonly occur when flashing Windows 10 with MiFlash version 2012.07.23. Download and install MiFlash version 20150601 instead; see Step 1 for details.

Third-party

From one perspective, Xiaomi's history is also the story of Qualcomm's Snapdragon mobile chips: from the msm8260 in the first Xiaomi phone, to the Snapdragon 400 in the Mi 2, the Snapdragon 800 in the Mi 3 and Mi 4, and now the 835 in the Mi 6 and the 845 series in the MIX 2S. Xiaomi and Qualcomm Snapdragon have been a winning combination for both sides. In China's phone market, Xiaomi helped make Snapdragon chips popular and widely accepted, leaving Meizu in the difficult position of endlessly refining MediaTek-based devices while sales declined. At the same time, the strong performance of Snapdragon chips helped Xiaomi grow, step by step. Each generation of Xiaomi's numbered flagship series naturally used Qualcomm's latest top-tier Snapdragon chip. As more enthusiasts and phone geeks explored these chips, development and experimentation with Xiaomi phones became increasingly diverse. One activity in particular deserves mention—flashing ROMs! Xiaomi's numbered series has always been a favorite among enthusiasts and tinkerers, especially the Mi 2/2S and Mi 4 series. Whether on Xiaomi's official forums or sites such as ROM Home, Anzhi, and Gfan, these phones have active communities, frequent updates, and plenty of ROMs, especially third-party ROMs. The Mi 4 became a classic phone for flashing. As a Mi fan, I have been squeezing every bit of performance out of my Mi 4 since I bought it, mostly by endlessly trying third-party ROMs. To this day, more than 40 Mi 4 ROMs sit quietly on my hard drive. I previously posted about Mi 4 ROMs and kept receiving private messages from fellow forum members, but work left me no time to organize them. Sorry about that. Today, with some free time, I can finally put the collection together for everyone who asked and paying tribute to this classic phone—and to those crazy years of flashing ROMs and tinkering~~~ 1. Notes and Disclaimers: 1. All ROM packages are from my collection, not made by me. If you encounter any problems after downloading and flashing them, you are responsible. 2. Since my cloud storage is too small, I only provide official download links for ROMs still available from their official websites. For ROMs I have already posted, I only provide the page URL. 3. I've grouped the ROMs by type so you can find the right package to flash. 4. To keep the post active and popular, I have used the dreaded reply-to-view restriction. Sorry, sorry~ 2. Final Thoughts: That covers pretty much all the third-party ROMs for the Mi 4. (I just noticed my Baidu cloud storage has expanded to 1T, haha~.) A few more points: 1. I have not personally flashed every ROM, so I will not provide explanations for issues with those ROMs. 2. A few ROM packages are fastboot packages; you need to extract them and find the relevant flashing tutorials yourself. 3. If you run into problems while flashing, reply or send me a private message, and I will respond when I have time.
